“Fortifications and Military Heritage of Sri Lanka”
1st National Conference on Fortifications and Military Heritage – ICOFORT Sri Lanka
5th and 6th November 2022, PGIAR, Colombo
The National Committee of International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Sri Lanka) is pleased to announce that its National Scientific Committee on Fortifications and Military Heritage (ICOFORT -SL) has planned the 1st National Conference on Fortifications and Military Heritage on 5th and 6th November 2022 at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR). The partners for the conference will be the Central Cultural Fund, the National Trust – Sri Lanka, and the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology. This is perhaps the first time in Sri Lanka that a conference of this scale is organized on the subject of Sri Lanka’s Fortifications and Military Heritage. The foremost aim of this conference is to explore the richness of this aspect of Sri Lanka’s heritage for better understanding, appreciation, and protection with the support of all stakeholders.
- The two-day conference will have several scientific/ academic sessions focusing on the following themes:
- Archaeology and Research
- History and Intangible Heritage
- Battle Tactics and Strategies
- Gunpowder Weapons and Projectiles
- Conservation, Sustainable Use, and Heritage Interpenetration
The Key-note speech will be delivered by Lt. Commander (Retired) Somasiri Devendra, followed by 21 presentations by several academics, researchers, and practitioners from universities, the Department of Archaeology, Department of National Museum, Central Cultural Fund, the National Trust – Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Navy and by other independent researchers and experts on the above-mentioned themes. Registration is now open for those who are interested in attending the conference. This will provide the opportunity to expand one’s knowledge on this subject, engage in discussion at the end of each presentation by sharing the knowledge, and interact with experts on this subject. The registered attendees will be given the literature connected with the conference (conference reader containing the detailed programme, abstract of each presentation, the profile of each presenter, etc.) and offered lunch, tea, and refreshments on both days.
The registration fee to attend the conference (5th and 6th November 2022) is Rs. 2000.00 per person. Please share the duly completed registration form (see attachment) together with the receipt of the fund transfer via email (email@example.com) or WhatsApp (0773404385), so that the organizers can confirm your participation with an official confirmation.
You may make the payment directly to the bank account of ICOMOS Sri Lanka, (Account No: 0002323099), Torrington Square Branch, Bank of Ceylon. You may also pay the registration fee to ICOMOS National Secretariat at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, 407, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 (contact person: Ms. Sonali Premaratne, Administrative Secretary, phone: 0701005550 by appointment), and hand over the duly filled registration form. You will receive a receipt for your payment, and it will serve as the confirmation of your registration.
Considering the immense academic value of this conference, university students will be offered the opportunity to attend the conference free of charge, depending on the availability of seats. However, we regret we are unable to extend meal facilities to them. The University Students who are interested in attending this conference shall email or WhatsApp the image (both sides) of their University ID to the above-mentioned contact details so that they could be informed of the availability of seats.
